Mr. Peter Richard Ross was born in the mid 1950’s in Florida, Gauteng. He lived there with his parents, two sisters and brother, until he was 15. During this time, he attended
St Catherine’s Convent, Discovery Primary School and Florida Park High School.
Peter left the comforts of a Reef town, to move to the
hustle and bustle of the city. As a result he finished his
secondary schooling at King Edward VII School in
Houghton. Throughout his schooling period Peter
enjoyed participating in a variety of extra-mural activities. His chief passion was swimming, but athletics, hockey and drama took up a fair amount of his time.
After school Peter completed his military training and moved on to do his tertiary education at the University of the Witwatersrand. He majored in Mathematics and Geography, and then completed his Diploma in Education.
A large part of his time was taken up with his involvement in his residence House Committee, which he chaired. It was at this time and through these activities that he met his future wife Margie Harrison. Peter was appointed as Mathematics Teacher to Jeppe High School for Boys. During his first term of teaching, he and Margie got married and spent the next 5 years in the hostel accommodation provided by the school. During this period he became well known within the Johannesburg community as a Mathematics teacher.
He was appointed to various committees that dealt with different aspects of education particularly those related to the changes in education and the challenges that were being faced by Mathematics teachers. Encouraged by these new challenges, Peter completed his Bachelor of Education degree.
The time came to start a family. Margie and he bought a little house in Kensington and soon after, Jessica and Stephen helped to fill the empty rooms. Margie returned to teaching when the children were ready to start their academic careers.
The position of Head of Department – Mathematics, and later that of Deputy Headmaster became available at Jeppe High School for Boys. Both of these posts Peter was successful in filling and as a result he and his family became an integral part of the Jeppe Family.
However, even though he was comfortable and motivated in this environment, as a Catholic, he had always yearned to become involved in Catholic Education. At this time he and his family were very involved and active within their Parish, particularly in the teaching of Catechetic. Thus when the Headship of Mount Edmund became available, Peter saw this as an opportunity in which he could fulfil these ideals and dreams.
He was delighted to be appointed into this position at the beginning of 2001, particularly as the College was to be celebrating two very important milestones in its history, namely the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Christian Brothers, and the College’s 80 years of service to the Pretoria community in their educational pursuits. He prays that the College may be blessed for many more years and that his endeavours will help to make a difference and he will see the College go from strength to strength.
